Starting a new class could feel like starting a new career. It seems like everyone knows. Not too concerned about it, though. All are focused on their mats, like islands in a sea of peace. Put on something feels comfortable, such as your favorite slightly worn-out sweatpants.

Do you want to know where to begin? Vinyasa and Hatha are great opening selections. Hatha eases you into each motion like a gentle flow. What about Vinyesa? It more closely resembles the rhythmic dance of a gentle breeze. How about the forms? Refrain from worrying. It’s perfectly acceptable if your Downward Dog appears to be an inquisitive dog.

It may seem obvious, but in yoga, breathing and inhaling are your lifeline. Breathing helps you stay grounded when your mind starts making grocery lists in the middle of a posture.

Invest in a quality yoga mat. Imagine that this is your island. Nothing fancy is required; you simply need something to keep you grounded and prevent you from going downhill.

Don’t forget that the goal is to have fun. Here, there is no competition. The Sanskrit names are easy to forget. When Tree Pose becomes a lovely sway, the real achievement is finding balance, both creatively and physically.
